What is printable CD-R or DVD-R media?

Printable media for both CD-R and DVD-R are distinguished by a special coating that is put on the media surface. This coating can be directly printed on using an inkjet printer. Manufacturers provide a media surface that dries quickly and usually won’t smudge. Inkjet CD-R and DVD-R are available in white or silver and usually cost a few cents more than standard lacquer media.

If I am using an inkjet printer, must I buy inkjet printable media?

Yes. You cannot successfully inkjet print on media that has not been specifically prepared for the inkjet process. Do not try and print to lacquer surfaces or media that is not sold as inkjet compatible.

What is the difference between thermal printable media and inkjet printable media?

Thermal printers use a special thermal transfer process to print directly onto the media. Heat is applied to a special ribbon and the image is then transferred onto the disc. Inkjet printers, in contrast, spray very fine drops of ink onto the surface of the media. This surface must be able to absorb the ink and dry in a relatively short period of time. Both inkjet and thermal printing allow for full color or single color printing.

What is Photocoat media and why is it more expensive?

Photocoat medias is a special product that provides an exceptional look for inkjet printing. A Photocoat disc actually has a special high gloss label that has been pre-applied to the disc. The label absorbs the ink and dries immediately with a look similar to a photograph. Photocoat media costs more than regular inkjet discs because the label stock is expensive and the label must be hand-applied to the disc. The appearance of the disc is striking and many users won’t settle for anything less. Photocoat media is used by Diversified Systems in duplication because of the superior quality print, the quick drying time, and the smudge free handling properties it exhibits.

I have a standard inkjet printer that does not allow me to print directly onto my media. What can I do?

Use Photocoat labels. Label stock is available in sheets that will work with any sheet fed inkjet printer. You’ll get an exceptional print using the Photocoat label. Labels are available for standard size media, business card, and mini CD-R.

Can you recommend a brand of inkjet printable media?

Mitsui and Taiyo Yuden both produce an excellent product. Taiyo Yuden media dries exceptionally fast. Both companies offer a silver and a white surface. Photocoat media will produce the best look, but will cost more than other brands.
